Do You Have A Quad Strain? Here Is What It Is, And How To Treat It.

Knee Pain

What Is a Quad Strain?

A Quad Strain, or quadriceps strain happens when you overstretch, or pull, the quadriceps muscle group. This large group of muscles runs down the front of your thigh. A strain can happen when you exercise or lift something or if you are injured. You may feel pain and tenderness that’s worse when you move your injured leg.

How does it feel?

Do You feel any of these symptoms:

  • Sharp
  • Tightness
  • Stiffness
  • Dull
  • Aching
  • Throbbing
  • Tight
  • Stiff

Signs and symptoms?

  • Feel a sharp pull on the front of your thigh
  • Occasionally, feel a pop on the front of your thigh when the injury occurs
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Difficulty lifting the leg
  • Swelling or bruising on the front of your thigh
  • Pain and tightness on the front of your thigh
  • Continuous pain following activity, particularly with walking, climbing, or descending stairs, or moving from a sitting to standing position.

  • We conduct a thorough examination including the back, hips, knee, and ankle/foot. We determine the root cause of your symptoms to ensure that physical therapy treatment is the best option for you.
  • We examine posture, range of motion, strength, reflexes, sensation, soft tissue mobility, joint mobility, nerve mobility, and functional movements to create a custom treatment plan. We also take into account any imaging that you have had like X-Rays, MRI, CT scans, etc.

Can Physical Therapy Help?

  • Yes!!! Recent onset of symptoms typically results in a quicker recovery time of about 6-8 weeks. Whereas persistent symptoms that have lasted longer than 6 months, usually takes 2-6 months to recover.
  • Good news!!! Recent research has actually shown that physical therapy is a better option than surgery, pain medication and injections. We can help you avoid unnecessary invasive procedures and tests that cost a fortune with limited effectiveness.
  • Steven was there when I really needed him. I had injured my leg playing football after work and had to limp off the field in pain. Even though it was late in the day, Steven was willing to see me on such short notice. After spending a great deal of time listening to me and assessing my leg, he was able to diagnose my injury and go through the recovery process with me. His positivity, caring personality and professionalism made me feel confident that I went to the right person. He even went out of his way to check up on me the next day. Steven is extremely knowledgeable and has a strong sports and orthopedic background. I would highly recommend him to anyone for sports related injuries like mine. – Eric W.
  • As good as it gets in physical therapy! Dr. Balogh treats his patients as more than just a number. He really does incorporate his own walk through physical therapy as a patient as a fuel to the passion he now has to help others realize the potential of their body. I got knocked during a soccer game and ended up hurting a tricky part of the knee anatomy. Not only did Dr. Balogh address the physical impairment in my condition but he also incorporated the learned skills and movement into applicable life situations as a student and as an athlete. Dr. B is the type of professional that goes above and beyond…. even far more than I would go for myself. That is the type of man that I would want in my corner as a physical therapist – I would recommend him to anyone! – Juan S. (Doctor of Physical Therapy Student)

What Causes a Quad Strain?

Your quad muscles make up the front part of your thigh. Unfortunately, your quads can be prone to injury because they cross two joints: your knee and hip. For people who participate in sports or activities that involve a lot of running or kicking, quad strains can be fairly common. Your quad muscles help to support your body’s movement.

A quad muscle strain can be caused by too much tension in the muscle, the use of excessive force, or repetitive motion. This is why it’s so important to stretch your quad muscles prior to exercise or sports games, and why it’s important to take breaks between games or activities.

There are three types of quad strains. These include:

  • Grade 1 Strains: These types of quad muscle strains cause mild discomfort in the thigh.
  • Grade 2 Strains: These quad muscle strains result in swelling, moderate pain, and have some loss of strength in the thigh.
  • Grade 3 Strains: These quad muscle strains are the most severe and result in significant pain and the inability to walk. This type of strain typically requires surgery.

Depending on the severity of your injury, quad muscle strains can take anywhere from two weeks to three months to recover from.

How Does Physical Therapy Help?

With the help of a professional and experienced physical therapist from B Physical Therapy, you can have peace of mind knowing you’re doing what’s necessary to recover from your quad strain. The initial treatment for quad muscle strains often involves a combination of icing, elevation, compression, and non-weight bearing rest. Once your quad had healed enough for you to straighten your knee with minimal pain, your physical therapist will begin using flexibility and strengthening exercises.

If you’ve suffered a quad muscle strain and you’re looking for an experienced physical therapist to help you recover from your injury, we’ve got you covered. Contact B Physical Therapy today.
